Thank-you messages for funeral contributions (from the family)

Updated 6 October 2026

Quick answer

Thank people within a week or two of the funeral. Mention the deceased by name, thank them for their presence, prayers and contribution together (you don't need to mention the amount), and sign from the family. A general message in the WhatsApp groups is fine, with a personal note to those who did the most.

Short message for WhatsApp
Thank you for your prayers, presence and support at the funeral of our late [Name]. The family is truly grateful. God bless you. 🙏

Who to thank and how

  • Everyone: a general message in each WhatsApp group the request went to.
  • The church, associations and employer: a letter or a message to their leader, which they can read out.
  • Those who did the most (cooked, hosted, gave large sums, travelled far): a call or a personal visit.
  • A notice in the newspaper or on radio, if that's your family's custom.

Make sure nobody is missed

The people most hurt by not being thanked are the ones whose donation was never recorded. Before you send personal thank-yous, check your contribution list against your MoMo statement and the cash receipts.

With Memora every contributor who paid by MoMo already got an SMS receipt when you confirmed their payment, and the full list of names is in your report, so personal thank-yous start from a complete list.

One contribution link and QR code for everyone. Donors send MoMo and get an SMS receipt once you confirm it, cash at the table goes on the same list, and the report is ready for the family meeting.

Questions people ask

Should I mention the amount in a thank-you message?

No. Thank people for their support and generosity in general terms. The amount belongs on the receipt, not the thank-you.

How soon after the funeral should we send thank-you messages?

Within one or two weeks, often around the thanksgiving service. A late thank-you is still better than none.
