How much should you give at a funeral in Ghana?

Updated 6 October 2026

Quick answer

There is no fixed amount. Give what you can afford, guided by how close you are to the deceased and the family, what they gave at your own family's funerals, and what your group (church, association, office) has agreed. Giving something, even a small amount, matters more than the size; among the Akan, attending a funeral without donating is frowned upon.

What decides the amount

  • How close you are: immediate family and close friends are expected to give more than acquaintances.
  • Reciprocity: among the Akan, funeral donations (nsawa) are understood as reciprocal. If the family gave at your relative's funeral, it's customary to give at least as much at theirs.
  • Your group: many churches, associations and offices agree an amount per member, or collect as a group and present it together.
  • What you can afford. Nobody should borrow to donate.

Giving as a group

Colleagues, old schoolmates and church groups often pool their money and present it together, which is announced with the group's name. Agree a collector, a deadline and how the total will be presented, and keep a list so every member's share is recorded.

If you can't attend

Send your donation by MoMo or through the family's contribution link, with a short message of condolence. Use only the number or link the family shared, and check the account name matches.

If the family uses Memora, you'll get an SMS receipt once they confirm your payment, so you know it arrived. Organising one yourself? See how to ask for funeral contributions.

Questions people ask

Is it rude to give a small amount at a funeral?

No. Giving what you can afford is always appropriate. What families notice is whether you came and supported them.

Do I have to give money if I attend a funeral in Ghana?

It's strongly expected, especially at Akan funerals, where donations are announced and recorded. If you truly can't give money, your presence and help on the day are still valued.

Can I donate to a funeral by mobile money?

Yes, most families now accept MoMo. Use only the number or link the family shared, and confirm the account name before you send.
